About Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis is a condition caused by the degeneration of the joint cartilage and bones of the knee, causing pain, stiffness, and immobility. Osteoarthritis is one of the leading causes of disability and chronic pain in the United States, with the knee being the most commonly affected joint.

Minor knee osteoarthritis stage 1 icon

Minor (Stage 1)

Pain is minimal or unnoticeable. Some ‘wear and tear’ in the cartilage in your knee joint.

Mild knee osteoarthritis stage 2 icon

Mild (Stage 2)

Some stiffness and pain in the knee joint, but there’s still enough cartilage to keep the bones from grinding together when moving.

Moderate knee osteoarthritis stage 3 icon

Moderate (Stage 3)

Cartilage has significantly reduced. More pain, especially during strenuous activity. More stiffness and difficulty moving.

Severe knee osteoarthritis stage 4 icon

Severe (Stage 4)

Cartilage in the knee is almost gone, leaving the bones to grind against each other when moving. Knee is stiff, painful, and difficult to move.

Knee Osteoarthritis Symptoms

Knee osteoarthritis is generally considered to be simple “wear and tear” condition that worsens with age and is accelerated by stress and strain on the knee. However, osteoarthritis is now understood to be a more complex disease process that involves low-grade inflammation in the cartilage, bone, and joint lining (synovium). This inflammation also contributes to the pain and stiffness that many knee osteoarthritis patients experience. The most common knee osteoarthritis symptoms are below.

Female with knee pain caused by knee osteoarthritis
  • Knee Pain: osteoarthritic knee pain can occur when you put pressure on your knee, when you move it, or even when you’re sitting still.
  • Stiffness: your knee may feel stiff, especially when you first get up after sitting or lying down for a long time.
  • Swelling: osteoarthritis can cause chronic knee swelling and puffiness.
  • Crackling or Grinding Noise: you might hear crackling or grinding when you move your knee, caused by your bones rubbing together.
  • Wobbly Knee: your knee may feel wobbly or unstable. Instability can worsen as you start to use your knees less.
  • Knee Locking Up: your knee may feel like it’s stuck when trying to move it.
  • Bone Spurs: bony lumps can grow on your bones due to friction caused by the loss of cartilage.
  • Baker’s Cyst: a joint fluid cyst can form at the back of your knee joint.
  • Mood Disorders: anxiety and depression are more common in individuals with knee osteoarthritis, primarily due to mobility challenges and chronic pain.

Knee Osteoarthritis Diagnosis

Knee Osteoarthritis Physical Exam icon

Physical Exam

Diagnosing knee osteoarthritis begins with a physical exam. Your physician will ask you about your symptoms and check your knee for abnormalities.

Knee osteoarthritis diagnosis imaging icon

Imaging

If your physical exam is consistent with knee osteoarthritis, an imaging study (usually an X-ray) will be ordered to confirm the knee osteoarthritis diagnosis. An MRI or CT may also be needed.

Knee Osteoarthritis Treatment

Knee osteoarthritis treatments span lifestyle changes, physical therapies, medications, minimally invasive procedures, and knee surgery.

Knee osteoarthritis genicular artery embolization icon

Genicular Artery Embolization

Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a minimally invasive procedure that provides relief from knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. It works by reducing blood flow to the inflamed lining of the knee, called the synovium, which helps to decrease inflammation and pain. Genicular artery embolization offers a novel knee osteoarthritis treatment option that can address pain without the need for surgery, while providing a more durable therapy than pain medications and injections.

Knee Surgery

Surgical knee osteoarthritis treatments include cartilage replacement, knee bone reshaping (osteotomy), partial knee replacement, and total knee replacement.
